Cinco de Mayo which translates to the 5^th of May is an annual celebration which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the battle of Puebla in 1862. The celebration is more popular in the USA than it is in Mexico where it has become a celebration of Mexican American culture. Celebrated in California since 1863, Cinco de Mayo became a nationwide celebration in the 1980s as a result of successful advertising campaigns by beer, wine, and tequila companies. Beer sales for Cinco de Mayo are now on a par with the Super Bowl.

At Layston Grove we have been having our own Mexican themed celebrations. We have enjoyed a weeklong schedule of activities in preparation for our Mexican fiesta.

The week has involved crafting decorations and accessories, making Mexican dishes and snacks, we even made our own guacamole. We have learned much about the country and its culture, it has been a fascinating week.

The fiesta itself was a lot of fun, we wore Mexican hats, drank cocktails, and enjoyed a good old-fashioned singalong. The sun was shining, and everyone was in high spirits. It’s been a very good week.
